Chapter Fifteen

It was a call at ten minutes to twelve that proved Ruth wrong.

She picked up the call and after exchanging a few remarks, motioned for me to follow her to the back office where she put the phone on speaker before continuing.

“Sorry I had to put you on hold Rhonda. Now what is it you were asking about?”

“That’s okay. I was saying how much I appreciated friends jumping in to help my cousins like you and Dorothy. Last night I took a trip down memory lane. When we were young, we just adored those cute Hummel figurines in Aunt Helga’s hutch. But we never could touch them. You saw those at the house I hope.”

Ruth responded. “I did. Very cute.”

“I found the costume jewelry and hats of Helga’s that Florence and I would play dress up with. Such fun memories. To be honest, it surprised me she’d kept them after her mother died.”

“I’m happy to hear you’re remembering the good times.”

“From her bedroom window I saw the field full of old cars is still there. Uncle George had quite a collection over the years. Too bad it became such an eyesore. I peeked in the garage. Yikes! Did you look in there?”

“No, we didn’t. Like I told you, we were going through papers to find any information we could about other family to contact.”

“Yes of course.” Rhonda mumbled something under her breath.

“I’m sorry I didn’t hear that,” Ruth said.

“Just reflecting on the spilling over of things here. My cousin’s ability to make repairs waned over the years. The garage is full of junk.”

“The contractor who donated the dumpster could leave it there until Florence gets home. Perhaps she will just want to get rid of a lot of things. Particularly the broken items Norman didn’t get to fix. Is there a question you have Rhonda?”

“Ah, oh yes,” Rhonda stuttered. “This is awkward.”

“Go on,” Ruth said raising her eyebrows questioningly at me.

“I was very surprised by what I heard from the woman next door regarding property of my cousin’s.”

Ruth’s eyes widened. “Hattie? I hope she didn’t bother you.”

“Yes, that was her name. Her concern came from seeing lights in the house going on and off. I think it was considerate of her as a neighbor to make sure things were okay.”

Ruth rolled her eyes. “Yes. I’m sure it concerned her.”

“She pointed out some areas on the walls and asked if I remembered what had hung there. Imagine my surprise when she said someone had taken the pieces from the house out on Thursday evening. She even said it with a tsk tsk. You know that sound,” Rhonda added in a conspiratorial way. “I put her off as a nosy neighbor. But my curiosity got the better of me. She told me you would know what happened to them. Do you Ruth?”

Ruth shot me a questioning look. What should she say?

“Ruth? Ruth? Are you still there?”

“Yes, I’m here Rhonda. I know what happened to them. An associate at my family photography store bought them.
